Passing of Carl Arthur Talbot, MCC's First Library Director

I regretfully inform the college community that Carl Arthur Talbot, MCC’s first Library Director, passed away peacefully on October 31, 2024, at the age of 97.

Carl was originally hired as a librarian at Monroe Community College on Alexander Street before later becoming MCC’s first Library Director. He remained the director until his retirement in 1988 and is credited with implementing an online system to track and obtain books, being involved in planning for an AIDS Resource Library and continuing to develop the MCC Archives. He also continued to support MCC students in his retirement through several generous donations.

He was a member of the Rochester Regional Library Council’s Advisory and Automation Committees and the SUNY Head Librarians organization. In his personal life, Carl was active with the George Eastman Museum, WXXI, and the Metropolitan Opera Guild of New York.

Carl is survived by his youngest sister, Joyce Heberle, and many nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Elizabeth Talbot; brother, Richard Talbot; and sisters, Arline Porter, Betty Randall, Catherine Spong, and Johanna Hubbs.

Born and raised in Rochester, Carl served in the US Army during World War II.

A church service will be held on Saturday, January 18, at 12 p.m., at the Asbury First United Methodist Church, 1050 East Avenue, Rochester, NY 14607.

His obituary can be found on the Democrat & Chronicle website.
