Quotes That Inspire

This week’s quote comes to us from Canada by way of MCC Assistant Chief of Public Safety Kevin Hall:

“Ultimately, leadership is not about glorious crowning acts. It's about keeping your team focused on a goal and motivated to do their best to achieve it, especially when the stakes are high and the consequences really matter. It is about laying the groundwork for others' success, and then standing back and letting them shine." – Col. Chris Hadfield, Canadian astronaut

Kevin shared the many ways this quote and MCC colleagues inspire him: “At first, my thoughts went to our recent law enforcement accreditation award, how long we have worked on it, and how many people made an effort to achieve it. Then I began to think about the efforts made by the all of the College community surrounding this pandemic, from changes in each office, to developing remote protocols, to pooled testing and entry screening. Finally, I realized that this quote fits what our faculty and staff have been doing all along for many years: laying the groundwork for the success of our students, allowing them to shine and become influencing members of society. Sometimes it takes a major incident for those in leadership to truly understand the depth and talent of those they are fortunate enough to work beside. I believe the MCC Community performs in a manner that should make us all proud and I see more and more examples of this every day.”

Thank you, Kevin for reflecting on the importance of our daily efforts to support student success, coupled with recognizing how hard we have all worked through this pandemic.

The stress of COVID-19 can leave us feeling isolated, overworked, and anxious about the future. So, during this season of giving and gratitude in the middle of an escalating global pandemic, please let in how valuable our work is and how much you are valued as we empower our students to shine.

May we all find some happiness during this year’s festival of lights.
