MCC Athletics Named Tops in Nation for Second Straight Year

The Monroe Community College athletic program was awarded the Pepsi NATYCAA Cup in the NJCAA Scholarship Division for a second straight year.

The Pepsi NATYCAA Awards are given to recognize overall athletic program excellence by two-year colleges based on success in championship competition at the national level.  Richard Ryther, associate vice president of student services at MCC, and Murph Shapiro, athletic director, represented Monroe Community College at an awards ceremony in Orlando, June 6-7.

The top three colleges in each division (NJCAA Scholarship, NJCAA non-scholarship, and State Associations) at the end of the school year receive a trophy at the convention. The top three schools also receive a cash award for their institution's general scholarship fund in the amount of $2,500 for first place and $1,000 for second and third place.

MCC finished first with a total of 179 points, 90 from women's teams and 89 from men's teams.  Cowley County Community College (Kansas) finished second and Johnson County Community College (Kansas) came in third place.

The MCC Tribunes athletic program recently wrapped another successful year.  MCC captured one national title (women's softball) during the 2006-2007 academic year.

Three MCC teams were runners-up at nationals (women's swimming and diving, ice hockey, and men's basketball).  The men's swimming and diving team, which included an individual national champion, and the women's soccer team finished third overall.  The women's basketball team finished seventh, while the women's volleyball, women's lacrosse, and baseball teams all participated in national tournaments.

This is the fourth year of the Pepsi NATYCAA Awards Program.  The National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators is the national professional organization of all two-year college athletic administrators from throughout the United States.

Established in 1987, NATYCAA is the only professional organization that represents all two-year institutions of higher education in the United States.
