PHO-118: Visual Media Foundations

Course Description

Visual Media Foundations introduces first-semester students to the essential skills, concepts, and professional practices of photography and video production. Students will develop discipline-specific study habits, technical proficiency with still and moving image cameras, file management workflows, and the vocabulary needed to analyze and discuss visual media. The course emphasizes portfolio development through the creation of an Electronic Portfolio (e-portfolio), ethical and responsible use of Artificial Intelligence, copyright and fair use, and beginner-level professional practices including contracts and pricing. Students will also explore potential career paths and transfer opportunities, and gain experience presenting their work in accessible and professional formats, culminating in a curated e-portfolio and artist statement.
