MCC Proud: Sam Hillmon

Lieutenant Sam Hillmon is a Campus Peace Officer and has worked at Monroe Community College (MCC) for nearly twenty years. He is responsible for running Public Safety operations at the Brighton Campus during the day shift (7AM to 3PM).

Hillmon graduated from Rush-Henrietta and is a proud MCC alumnus.

He hadn’t considered a career in law enforcement until it came time to choose a college major. “I made the decision to go into criminal justice because I thought working in Parole or Probation would be something I liked,” he said.

Hillmon got a student aide job with Public Safety and the rest is history!

He fondly remembers being appointed class sergeant during his six-month police academy training for the peace officer position. Chosen by class counselors, a class sergeant serves as part of the command staff for half of the class.

Reflecting on his years at MCC, Hillmon recalled a particularly funny moment when he was put in charge as a sergeant for the very first time. “During that shift, I received a radio call that there was a turkey in a suite in Tribune Hall. I thought that someone was playing a joke because of the nature of the call…” he said. However, upon his arrival, there was a live turkey inside one of the suites! The wild turkey flew in through a first-floor window and couldn’t find its way back out. And in case you’re wondering - Hillmon can confirm the turkey was safely returned to the outdoors.

When asked what advice he’d give current MCC students, Hillmon said, “Follow your own path, find yourself, and work hard!”  For students considering enrolling, Hillmon said, “Stop considering and start doing, it’s a great place to be.”

Outside of MCC, Sam coaches Boys Varsity Lacrosse for Rush-Henrietta and the 2031 FCA Upstate Navy Boy’s Lacrosse team.
