MCC Proud: Meet Yolanda Johnson

Yolanda Johnson serves as the Manager of the Campus Events office at Monroe Community College (MCC), where she assists with scheduling both internal and external non-academic events across both campuses. She has been with MCC for approximately 19-20 years.

Alongside her work with Campus Events, Johnson serves as the Interim President of MCC’s chapter of the American Association of Women in Community Colleges and as the AAWCC Region I Director.

Johnson graduated from MCC and Roberts Wesleyan. With a natural affinity for numbers, she began her studies in accounting before transitioning to business. That path ultimately led to her career in event planning.

Reflecting on her time at the College, Johnson is most proud of earning her degree and obtaining her B.A. through the Roberts Wesleyan Accelerated program at MCC. She added, “I’m the first in my family to achieve both degrees, so that was HUGE.”

When asked what advice she would give current students, Johnson said, “Stay positive. There are no shortcuts, and challenges will come, but push through as best as you can. Knowing that you achieve a goal that you set for yourself can be just as rewarding as winning the lotto (of course, money is good, but it’s just an example).”

For prospective students, Johnson adds, “Do what you know will be best for you. Sometimes it’s hard to face your own truth, but knowing what you want and where you want to go in life (even if it’s just 3 months, 6 months, a year, or more) can help you determine your best next step. Of course, walking is just as good as running, so take your time. Work at the pace that fits you and no one else.”

Johnson isn’t involved in any outside organizations, but she does love to cook. “Not at the chef level, but I feel I can fill stomachs comfortably without anyone going to the ER.”

Fun Facts About Yolanda

Courtney: If you had to eat the same meal at least once a day, what would it be?
Yolanda: If I am cooking, then it's lasagna. Full works, meaty sauce, ricotta, cheese, and layered. Sides - salad and fresh garlic bread.
Courtney: What is your favorite movie?
Yolanda: I am caught between 6 - Goonies, Clue, Star Wars, Godfather, and Lord of the Rings
Courtney: What is your favorite sports team?
Yolanda: I don’t have one… To be honest, I go with the team(s) whose uniform colors would work best on me.
Courtney: What is your biggest fear?
Yolanda: Spiders and dying in pain.
Courtney: Is there anything about you that people are surprised to learn?
Yolanda: I have never been to New York City… it’s on my bucket list.
Courtney: If you could attend a dinner with any celebrity, living or dead, who would you choose?
Yolanda: Wow… there is no “one” person I can think of. Only a lot!
Courtney: Do you prefer staying up late or waking up early in the morning?
Yolanda: I prefer waking up early. I am best first thing in the morning…
Courtney: Share the best piece of advice anyone has ever given you.
Yolanda: Know your worth, do your best, but be humble because you never know what might happen tomorrow.
Courtney: What destination do you hope to visit one day?
Yolanda: Hmm… I have a few places I would like to see, but if I could pick one right now, it would be the Bahamas.
Courtney: What activities do you participate in over the weekend?
Yolanda: Nothing special except spending time with family and friends.
