Snow and Ice Safety Tips
Walking to and from parking lots or between buildings during winter requires special attention to avoid slipping and falling. Despite the hard work of the Grounds Crew to keep the parking lots and sidewalks clear, slippery surfaces can still be encountered when walking outdoors. It’s important for everyone to remain aware of these dangers and learn how to walk safely on ice and slippery surfaces. Please keep the following safety tips in mind:
- Approach with Caution: In cold temperatures, be cautious and assume that all wet, dark areas on pavements are slippery and icy.
- Choose Appropriate Footwear: During inclement weather, avoid boots or shoes with smooth soles and heels. Instead, wear shoes or boots that provide traction on snow and ice; boots made of non-slip rubber or neoprene with grooved soles are ideal.
- Be Careful When Exiting Your Vehicle: When getting out of your car, swing one leg out and check for slippery conditions. Hold onto your car door for extra support to prevent slipping and falling.
- Use Cleared Walkways: Stick to walkways that have been salted or shoveled. Avoid shortcuts over snow piles or in areas where snow and ice removal is not feasible.
- Walk with a Slightly Open Stance: Point your feet out slightly, like a penguin! This stance increases your center of gravity, helping you maintain balance on ice.
- Maintain Proper Posture: Bend slightly and walk flat-footed, keeping your center of gravity directly over your feet as much as possible.
- Balance with Your Arms: Extend your arms out to your sides to help maintain balance.
- Keep Your Hands Free: Avoid putting your hands in your pockets while walking. Keeping your hands free allows you to break your fall if you start to slip.
- Take Short Steps: Take short steps or shuffle your feet for better stability.
- Avoid Landing on Vulnerable Areas: If you do fall, try to avoid landing on your knees, wrists, or spine. Aim to fall on a fleshy part of your body, such as your side.
- Stay Alert and Move Slowly: Watch where you are stepping and move Slowly!
If you encounter or notice any icy conditions, please contact our Public Safety Dispatch at 585-292-2912 so that our Grounds Team can respond and treat the area.
