Professor Angelique Stevens was selected as the recipient of the Rona Jaffe Foundation Fellowship for 2025. The fellowship, which is attached to a $2500 stipend, was developed to support a MacDowell Fellow in residence in the same year. The donors of the Rona Jaffe fellowships fund residencies, providing crucial grants to MacDowell. They believe the power of art and the need for time and space to create.

Angelique was a fellow in residence at MacDowell in 2025. There she stayed in the Phi Beta Studio on the MacDowell campus in Peterborough New Hampshire and worked on her book—a collection of essays about growing up in poverty—forthcoming from Simon & Schuster.

MacDowell is the nation’s first artist residency program. It awarded 200 Fellowships to artists working in seven disciplines from 25 states and 15 countries for the 2025 Spring-Summer season. “These artists worked at MacDowell’s historic campus in Peterborough, NH from March through August 2025 for an average stay of four weeks. The incoming group of artists-in-residence were selected from a pool of 2,222 applications with an acceptance rate of 6.8 percent. Fellowships are awarded based on a work sample judged by independent panels of experts in each of MacDowells’ seven disciplines.”

Since 1907 MacDowell’s mission has been to “create a space where inspiration happens on a daily basis.” MacDowell has hosted over 9,000 artists in residence from seven disciplines including winners of Pulitzer Prizes, National Book Awards, and Guggenheim Fellowships. MacDowell artist residency accepts visual and interdisciplinary artists, architects, filmmakers, composters, playwrights, poets, and writers. Notable artists include James Baldwin, Colson Whitehead, Louise Erdrich, and Alexander Chee.
