National Police Week
In 1962, a joint resolution of Congress declared the first National Police Week, commemorated this year from May 11 to May 17, with May 15 designated as National Peace Officers Memorial Day. This week is in recognition of those law enforcement officers who have lost their lives in the line of duty for the safety and protection of others.
According to the National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund (NLEMF), since the first recorded police death in 1786, there have been more than 24,000 law enforcement officers killed in the line of duty. Of those deaths, more than 2,500 have occurred in the past ten years. In 2024, 148 officers were killed in the line of duty, with 22 of them being in New York State.
A candlelight vigil will be held today, May 13, on the National Mall in honor of officers killed in the line of duty. You can watch the live stream on the NLEMF website beginning at 8 p.m.
The Monroe Community College Department of Public Safety would like to extend its support to its fellow law enforcement officers and extend our deepest gratitude to them. We also stand united in remembering those officers who gave their lives to protect others. Like our fellow officers, we are honored to serve and protect our community and remain steadfast in our commitment. We thank all of our fellow MCC colleagues for your respect and support.
