Community Safety and Vigilance
Dear members of the MCC Community,
Recent acts of violence at Brown University and Bondi Beach in Australia are deeply troubling and understandably raise concerns across academic and public communities worldwide. While these incidents occurred far from our campus, they serve as an important reminder of the need for ongoing vigilance and shared responsibility for safety.
The safety and well-being of our students, faculty, staff, and visitors remain our top priorities. Our departments continue to work closely with campus partners to maintain a secure environment, and we remain committed to promptly addressing any concerns that arise. With the help of our public safety department, we proactively conduct routine exercises to prepare for acts of violence, such as active shooter incidents. While such a need is unlikely at our college, we prepare nonetheless due to events elsewhere.
We encourage everyone to stay vigilant about their surroundings and report any suspicious or concerning behavior through the established campus channels. MCC’s Public Safety phone number is (585) 292-2911. Additionally, members of the public safety team and the student rights and responsibilities team participate in the Rochester Threat Advisory Committee (ROCTAC). ROCTAC focuses on keeping Monroe County safe through community-based intervention approaches for threats, threatening behavior by an individual, grievance-fueled violence, and online radicalization. Small actions—speaking up, checking in with others, and following safety protocols—are crucial in maintaining our community's safety.
Equally important, we recognize that news of such events can be upsetting. Support resources are available for anyone affected, and we encourage community members to use them when needed. The Monroe Community College Behavioral Intervention Team (CARE) offers coordinated support for students in distress and addresses concerns about student behavior and personal issues, including mental health. CARE collects information through personal contact with students, faculty, staff, and family members, as well as reports submitted by community members. MCC's Counseling staff is prepared to assist students. Please contact Counseling Services at (585) 292-2140 or Counseling Services (counselingservices@monroecc.edu) to make an appointment with a counselor or for more information.
Counseling support is also available for employees through EmployeeConnect, MCC's employee assistance program, provided by our Human Resources Department.
Thank you for your professionalism, awareness, and ongoing commitment to each other. Collectively, we help deliver the reassurance and stability our community expects and deserves.
