UR Workshop on Reducing Barriers to Student Research

MCC's URSICA Committee is pleased to offer a workshop designed to help faculty structure research assignments with an eye towards increased student success.

  • Reducing Barriers to Student Research: Structuring Assignments with Transparency
  • Thursday, April 30, 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM
  • TCC (12-201) or join the workshop via Zoom
  • As instructors, we've likely heard students claiming “I don't know where to start” or “I don't know what to do next.” What seems obvious to an expert is often far less so to a beginner's mind. With insights from librarians who work closely with faculty and assist students throughout the research process, we will explore and apply the Transparency in Learning and Teaching (TiLT) framework with particular attention to student research assignments. TiLT is a framework for clarifying the purpose, tasks, and assessment of an assignment so that students better understand both what they are being asked to do and the skills they are developing. This workshop will briefly introduce TiLT and discuss the benefits to students, instructors, and library staff. This workshop will allow participants time to discuss their own experiences with assignments and consider ways that aspects of the TiLT framework might be incorporated into their own teaching. Veterans and beginners are welcome as there is always room for a little more clarity and connection.
  • Please email Maria Brandt (mbrandt@monroecc.edu) to indicate your interest in attending
