Trash Collection Update/Single Use Plastics
Dear MCC Community,
In accordance with SUNY Policy 5201 – “Elimination of Single Use Plastics and Preference for Durable and Reusable Alternatives”, and its related procedure, 5200, Custodial Operations will be making important adjustments to how we handle waste collection at each of our campuses.
During the month of October, we will be transitioning to centralized trash removal. This means:
- The number of trash and recycling bins in hallways and public areas will be significantly reduced. Small and medium sized receptacles will be replaced with fewer, larger ones.
- Classrooms will no longer have individual trash bins. The exceptions are Medical, Dental and Hospitality classrooms and labs. All trash and recycling will need to be disposed of in the new receptacles located in the hallways and public areas.
- Individual wastebaskets in offices will no longer be provided with plastic liners. This means that wet or food trash needs to be disposed of at designated centralized stations located throughout suites and hallways.
- For nightly trash pickup, we asked you to please place your trash can outside of your office. Custodial Operations will enter offices once a week to check floors and ensure that trash is emptied.
- For all other requests, please submit a Facilities Work Order.
This operational change is designed to:
- Reduce plastic waste generated from thousands of single-use trash liners used annually.
- Encourage proper sorting of recyclables and landfill items.
- Align MCC with the commitments listed in the SUNY Climate and Sustainability Action Plan.
This change in our daily routine is a meaningful step toward building a more sustainable future.
Thank you for your cooperation and support in helping MCC’s efforts to fully phase out single-use plastics, consistent with SUNY’s adopted policy.
