Merry & Bright: How a Classroom Conversation Became Campuswide Care

Please share with students:

Merry & Bright: A Celebration of Community and Belonging at MCC Downtown

At MCC Downtown, our students continue to show us what community looks like in action. What began as a conversation in a Sociology class grew into something much larger—a Merry & Bright event that brought dignity, joy, and meaningful support to our entire Downtown community.

My heartfelt thanks to Professor Dina Giovanelli and her Sociology students, whose leadership and compassion transformed classroom learning into a powerful act of service. Their work created a space where every student felt seen, welcomed, and valued.

We are also deeply grateful to our campus and community partners whose collaboration made this day possible:

  • Counseling, Health Services and Disability Services, for providing lunch, wellness education, and student-centered care.
  • Foodlink, for bringing the Curbside Market to campus along with nutrition education and benefits navigation resources.
  • Monroe County Department of Human Services and Human Resources, for joining us on site and supporting students navigating essential services.
  • Nazareth College, for standing alongside our students and contributing to this community-centered day.

The Merry & Bright event offered free holiday shopping, thoughtful gifts, and a warm sense of belonging at a time of year that can be difficult for many. It was more than an event—it was a celebration of care, dignity, and the belief that everyone deserves to feel supported.

Thank you to everyone who contributed.
We take care of us at MCC Downtown—and this day proved it.
