MCC Geology Students Present at Geological Society of America Conference!

Please share with students:

Four MCC Geology students, Cyrus Gallagher, Lily Lockwood, Mileena Ossman, and August Speller, co-authored and presented a professional poster titled "Pathways to the Classroom: Engaging Community College Students in K-12 STEM Teaching" earlier this week at the Geological Society of America Northeastern Section Conference in Hartford, CT (see photo #1). These students have been participating in the National Science Foundation Noyce Grant "Supporting and Preparing Future STEM Teachers through Scholarship and Teaching Experiences" as guided by grant co-PIs and MCC Geology Professors Barone and Colosimo.

Each student has earned the position of Educational Assistant Intern in an introductory level geology lab where they aid students within the lab meetings and provide tutoring outside of the lab meetings. They are also collaborating on a project with a K-12 Earth Science teacher through their role on the Noyce Creation Team. They presented their experiences completing this meaningful work during a poster session at the conference as the only community college students in attendance.

On a fun and proud side note, MCC alumni, Faith Ray, was also participating in this geology conference, as she has now moved onto SUNY Potsdam to complete her undergraduate geology degree! Please see photo #2.
