New York Times Commissions MCC Graduate's Artwork for U.S. Open Feature

2023 MCC graduate Zazie Weldgen’s illustration was featured in the New York Times Print Edition on Sunday morning (featured in the New York Times Online Edition on Saturday). The New York Times commissioned her illustration in the sports section as part of a U.S. Open (tennis) preview. The illustration depicts 179 creatures and animals at the U.S. Open. She chose her subjects based on animals specific to New York State and mythical creatures related to New York City landmarks. Measuring 28 inches tall and 17 inches long, the illustration took three months to prepare.

This is not the first time Zazie has been recognized. Earlier this year,  The Society of Illustrators accepted her mural in its 68th Illustrator’s Annual exhibition in the Product and Surface Design category. We featured a story in February on our website about her accomplishment.

Zazie’s dad, Franzie Weldgen, is a professor in MCC’s Visual and Performing Arts Department. The proud dad bought 14 copies of Sunday’s New York Times, and who could blame him! Congratulations, Zazie (and Franzie) on this extraordinary accomplishment!
