MCC Daily Tribune
Creating Accessible Social Media Posts
As with all of our digital content and communications, social media posts created after the April 24 Title II deadline need to adhere to the Fundamentals of Digital Content Accessibility outlined in Monday’s Tribune article. Posts created before April 24, 2026 do not need to be edited or remediated. Additionally, MCC is not responsible for the accessibility of any comments on, responses to, or shares of our social media posts.
Images and Graphics
Alt text is required for any images included in your posts. Alt text should be descriptive, clear, and concise. Some platforms have character limits for their alt text fields.
Known character limits:
- LinkedIn: 1,000 characters
- TikTok: 300 characters
- Facebook: Recommended under 150 characters
- Instagram: Allows for up to 100-250 characters
- X: 1,000 characters
Avoid text-heavy images. Do not place important information in the image(s) only. When using text-heavy images like flyers or infographics, use alt text for a short summary of what is essential and include the key information in the text of your post.
Videos and Audio Content
All video and audio content included in social media post must adhere to WCAG 2.1 AA standards. Captions are required for all videos, including live streams. Transcripts are required for all audio content and are recommended for longer videos. If important visual information is not communicated in the audio, provide audio descriptions or incorporate that information into the narration.
Writing Accessible Captions and Posts
- Use plain language. Write clearly and simply, avoid jargon and acronyms, and leep sentences short and direct.
- For hashtags, use CamelCase, capitalize the first letter of each word, and limit use to improve readability.
- Use emojis sparingly and place them at the end of sentences when possible. Avoid replacing words with emojis.
Accessibility Checklist
Before publishing content, confirm:
- Alt text is added to all images
- Videos include captions
- Important text is in the caption
- Color contrast is sufficient
- Hashtags use CamelCase
- Links are descriptive
- Emojis are minimal
SMS Text Messages
It is not technologically possible to include descriptive link text in SMS text messages sent from MCC systems, like Mongoose. When including URLs in text messages, provide a text description before the URL.
