Healthy Hint: Walk your Way to a Healthier You
According to the Mayo Clinic, “something as simple as a daily brisk walk can help you live a healthier life.” Regular brisk walking can help you:
- Prevent or manage conditions such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes
- Improve cardiovascular fitness
- Strengthen your bones and muscle
- Improve your mood, memory, and sleep
- Improve your balance and coordination
Proper walking technique helps you get the most benefits – walk with your head high, eyes forward, back straight, swinging your arms freely with a slight elbow-bend, smoothly rolling your foot from heel to toe. Be sure to wear shoes with proper arch support and thick flexible soles to cushion your feet and absorb shock.
Start with a simple goal such as 'I’ll walk 5 minutes during my lunch break' and slowly increase to at least 30 minutes each day.
Options for Walking:
- MCC – indoor halls or PAC, outside paths and sidewalks
- Malls – Marketplace, Greece Ridge, Eastview
- Parks – Most town and county parks have some paths for walking
- Community Centers – Several area towns have centers with indoor tracks that are free to town residents and open to non-residents for a relatively small fee
