What Were You Wearing Exhibit to Open Wednesday at Mercer Gallery

Please share with students:

The office of Students Rights and Responsibilities, in partnership with RESTORE Sexual Assault Services, invites you to visit a poignant exhibit coming to the Mercer Gallery in April to commemorate Sexual Assault Awareness Month. “What Were You Wearing” features a display of re-creation of clothing survivors were wearing when they were assaulted. It is designed to dispel the myth that what a person wears equates to consent.

The statistics about sexual violence are staggering. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

  • Nearly half of women and more than 17% of men experienced some form of contact sexual violence in their lifetimes.
  • More than 20% of women and 3% of men have experienced completed or attempted rape in their lifetimes
  • Almost 33% of women experienced verbal sexual harassment in the workplace or a public place in their lifetime.
  • 11% of men experienced verbal sexual harassment in the workplace, and 7% of men experienced verbal sexual harassment in a public place in their lifetimes
  • More than 25% of women and about 17% of men experienced technology-facilitated sexual violence in their lifetimes.

The grand opening of the “What Were You Wearing” exhibit is on Wednesday, April 8, from 4:30 pm to 5:30 pm. Admission is free.
