New Advocacy Course

Dear Colleagues and Students,

As we continue to roll out new and revised offerings across our programs, I wanted to highlight a new course that will launch in Spring 2027: SPC 208 – Communication, Advocacy, and Democracy.

SPC 208 carries dual SUNY General Education designations (DVRS and CVDS) and examines the central role communication plays in democratic processes such as protest, civic engagement, and advocacy. The course explores the history of advocacy movements, contemporary tactics, and ethical approaches to engagement, with an emphasis on practical communication skills students can apply in civic and community contexts.

As advisors and student success coaches guide students toward courses that fulfill these designations, SPC 208 may be a helpful option to keep on your radar.

Given the complexity and volatility of today’s political and social landscape, the need for informed, ethical, and engaged citizens continues to grow. As students observe, and increasingly participate in advocacy efforts and social movements, this course offers a timely space to critically examine those efforts and build skills for thoughtful participation.

We welcome students from across disciplines and would be glad for SPC 208 to be considered among the options students choose to fulfill their SUNY GenEd requirements.

Please feel free to reach out if you’d like additional details or a sample syllabus.
