Healthy Hint: Sleep!
The Mayo Clinic states that studies show that lack of sleep can affect your immune systems. During sleep, your immune system makes proteins called cytokines, which serve to help fight off infections and help you recover if you do get sick.
The National Sleep Foundation recommends seven to nine hours of nightly sleep for adults between the ages of 18 and 64. Shortchanging sleep has been associated with weight gain, reduced immunity, high blood pressure, and depression. Lack of sleep can also affect your outlook, mood, attention span, and job performance.
Tips for getting better sleep:
- Have a regular sleeping schedule, including weekends.
- Have a cool bedroom, between 60-67 degrees Fahrenheit promotes sleep.
- Finish eating two to three hours before bedtime.
- Limit caffeinated products you consume, especially after noon.
- Skip alcohol and nicotine close to bedtime as they can disrupt sleep.
- Exercise regularly. Low-impact activities like walking are helpful with improving sleep.
