Professor Angelique Stevens Offered Artist Residency at Art Omi

Professor Angelique Stevens was recently offered an artist residency at Art Omi in the Hudson Valley. Angelique is among ten international writers selected to live and work in a rural setting overlooking the Catskill mountains. International, cultural, and creative exchange is a foundation of the Art Omi mission, and a wide distribution of national background is an important part of their competitive juried selection process. All residencies are fully funded including accommodations, meals, local transport, and public programming.

“Since its founding, Art Omi has been guided by the principle that artistic expression transcends economic, political, and cultural boundaries. Art Omi has hosted more than 2,000 artists from over 100 countries.” Notable alumni include Nadia Owusu, author of Aftershocks and Whiting Award Winner; Aleksander Hemon, author of The Question of Bruno and MacArthur Foundation Genius Grant awardee; Colum McCann, author of Let the World Spin and National Book Award winner; and Kiran Desai, bestselling author of Inheritance of Loss which won the Man Booker Prize.

Angelique will use her time at Art Omi to work on the final revisions of her book, a collection of essays about living on both sides of the poverty line forthcoming from Simon & Schuster. The book explores perceptions of poverty as it relates to the American Dream and the bootstrapping myth.
