Affordable,Accessible,Open: OER at MCC

In the 2024–25 academic year, SUNY students saved more than $14 million on textbooks thanks to over 5,600 course sections using Open Educational Resources (OER). Since 2017, SUNY's cumulative student savings from OER top nearly $120 million — and MCC is part of that story.

As the fall semester kicks off, here's a quick refresher on OER at MCC:

How do students know which courses use OER? Look for the OER attribute in the course schedule — you can even limit your search to OER-only classes.

How do faculty note they're using OER? Go to MyMCC > Employee Home > Employee Tools > Faculty Resources > Renew Course Designations. If you get a message saying you're not OER-certified, email Michelle Beechey (mbeechey@monroecc.edu) with your course number to get added. 

Where can I learn more about OER opportunities? Visit MCC Libraries' Open Educational Resources, Copyright & Creative Commons libguide.  Funding is available via the SUNY OER Gateway Impact Initiative, with applications being accepted on a rolling basis through December 1, 2026.
