Heat and Air Quality Advisory: Please Take Precautions

The Rochester area is currently experiencing higher-than-normal temperatures along with reduced air quality due to smoke from ongoing Canadian wildfires. These conditions can pose health risks, particularly for children, older adults, and individuals with asthma, heart disease, or other respiratory conditions.

Residents are encouraged to take the following precautions:

  • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water throughout the day, even if you do not feel thirsty.
  • Limit outdoor activities, especially during the hottest parts of the day and when air quality is poor.
  • Spend time indoors in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.
  • Keep windows closed to prevent smoke from entering your home.
  • Monitor symptoms such as coughing, shortness of breath, wheezing, dizziness, or unusual fatigue.
  • Take extra care if you have asthma, COPD, heart disease, or other health conditions that may be worsened by heat or poor air quality.

If you must be outdoors, consider reducing the intensity and duration of your activities and take frequent breaks in a cool, clean-air environment.

Please stay informed by monitoring local weather and air quality reports and checking on family members, neighbors, and others who may be more vulnerable to these conditions.

By taking simple precautions, we can all help protect our health and safety during this period of extreme heat and reduced air quality. Stay safe, stay cool, and stay hydrated.
