MCC Proud: Meet Debbie Ake

Debbie Ake is the Department Secretary for the Engineering Science and Physics Department. With nearly 20 years of dedicated service to the college, she brings a wealth of experience and a longstanding commitment to supporting students, faculty, and staff.

Ake's dedication and impact have not gone unnoticed. Over the years, she has received several awards, including the Distinguished Support Staff Award and the Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Classified Service.

Working in education allowed Ake to pair a lifelong administrative career with something she found especially rewarding: helping students succeed. “I have been a secretary from the time I graduated high school,” said Ake. “I knew that working with students would make that even more special.”

Over the course of her career at MCC, Ake has had the opportunity to work alongside exceptional colleagues and watch countless students achieve their goals. Seeing students reach important milestones has been especially meaningful to her. “I have enjoyed helping out at Commencement and seeing their happiness at what they have accomplished,” she said.

When asked what advice she would give current or prospective students, Ake said, “MCC has so many resources available to you, including the dedicated faculty and support staff. Take advantage of all that MCC has to offer and you will be successful.”

In addition to her work at the college, Ake is an active leader within the CSEA. “I am the CSEA MCC unit secretary and the CSEA Local 828 union treasurer,” she said.

While Ake has spent years supporting the MCC community, her greatest source of pride and happiness can be found at home with her family. “I live with my daughter and son-in-law and two grandsons, one of whom was just adopted in February!” she said. “I also have two granddaughters, and they are all the light of my life.”
