Spring 2026 Mentors Needed for COS 181, Strategies for Academic Progress
Thank you to everyone who has volunteered as a COS 181 mentor over the past several years! We truly appreciate your ongoing support for our students.
Over time, we have experimented with different approaches to offering mentoring opportunities. For the Spring 2026 semester, we are once again seeking volunteers from across the College community.
In the past, we attempted to streamline the process by asking mentors to notify us if they wished to continue each semester. However, due to busy schedules and fluctuating job demands, we have decided to request volunteers anew each semester.
If you are interested in serving as a mentor for the Spring 2026 semester, please complete the COS 181 Mentor Interest Survey.
COS 181 is designed to support students who are working toward achieving Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) and advancing in their program of study. A key component of the course is a meaningful connection with a mentor.
Anyone who works at Monroe Community College can be a mentor. Through our mentoring program, we aim to:
- encourage students to create conditions that will help them thrive
- cultivate curiosity and engage with a spirit of genuine care
- practice being deep listeners and reflective questioners
- support students on their journey at MCC (and beyond!)
- create a transformational experience for both mentees and mentors
Mentors schedule an initial meeting with their student(s) either in person, by phone, via email, or on Zoom, and connect regularly thereafter (recommended once per week). Mentors support students by:
- discussing well-being and academic progress
- helping identify and navigate campus resources
- talking through current academic challenges
- co-creating goals and next steps
- providing consistent encouragement and support
If you are considering becoming a mentor and would like more information, feel free to contact Renee Dimino (rdimino@monroecc.edu).
Since all COS 181 courses are late-start, mentors will be notified of student pairings in March, at which point meetings with students will begin.
All mentors will be invited to a Mentor Information Meeting (which will be recorded for those unable to attend), as well as an optional mentor check-in meeting.
Thank you for considering this meaningful opportunity to support our students!
