Dr. Jessica McArt Named Dean of the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University

Dr. McArt Currently Serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences at the SUNY Campus

Albany, NY – The State University of New York Board of Trustees voted Tuesday to approve the appointment of Dr. Jessica McArt by the Cornell University Board of Trustees as the incoming Dean of the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University. Dr. McArt currently serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences at the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University, a SUNY statutory college. Her appointment is effective on July 15, 2026.

“SUNY’s College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University is a renowned institution for biomedical research, attracting top researchers, faculty, and students alike,” said SUNY Chancellor King. “I am excited to congratulate incoming Dean Dr. Jessica McArt, as she upholds SUNY's values and paves the way for advancing research for the public good and providing an excellent education for generations to follow.”

SUNY has five statutory campuses, including the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, and at Cornell University, the New York State College of Agriculture & Life Sciences, New York State College of Human Ecology, New York State School of Industrial & Labor Relations, and the New York State College of Veterinary Medicine.

About Incoming Dean Dr. Jessica McArt
Dr. Jessica A. A. McArt currently serves as Professor and Chair of the Department of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University. A board-certified diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners (Dairy Practice), she is an internationally recognized leader in dairy cattle health, applied epidemiology, and transition cow disease research. She currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of JDS Communications and has received numerous honors, including the Zoetis Award for Veterinary Research Excellence and the American Dairy Science Association Foundation Scholar Award.

Professor McArt’s research program focuses on the biology, epidemiology, and economic impact of periparturient diseases in dairy cows, with an emphasis on improving early detection, prevention, and treatment strategies. Her work integrates clinical service, diagnostics, and data-driven approaches, including machine learning and modeling, to improve animal health, production efficiency, and farm profitability.

As Section Chief of the Ambulatory and Production Medicine Clinic, Professor McArt led a team of clinicians delivering community-based care, including through the COVID-19 pandemic. Since serving as Chair, she leads a department of more than 50 faculty across tenure-track, research, teaching, and extension roles. In these positions, she has overseen strategic planning, multi-year budget development, faculty recruitment and workload alignment, and facility planning, while strengthening departmental cohesion and performance.

Dr. McArt received her D.V.M and Ph.D. from Cornell University and a B.A. from Dartmouth College.
