Professional Development Opportunity for Program Coordinators
In Times Higher Education, Joanna Westidentifies the importance of “cultivating community within a program” as a cornerstone for boosting “a sense of belonging” for students at two-year colleges. Dr. Maria Brandt from English/Philosophy recently completed a Professional Leave that focused on what it might mean to cultivate community on the program level at MCC and now will share some of what she learned with other Program Coordinators through a two-part Professional-Development Workshop. Here are details:
- Both Workshops will be in-person at the TCC and also accessible via Zoom.
- The first Workshop will be Friday, February 27, from 12-12:50 PM. Here, participants will review scholarship surrounding belonging in programs and then review a “10-Step Guide for Program Re-Booting with an Eye Towards Cultivating Student Belonging.”
- The second Workshop will be Thursday, April 23, from 2-4 PM. Here, participants will analyze the 10-Step Guide. They’ll share ideas/practices that have worked, discuss obstacles, revise the 10-Step Guide as needed, and then develop plans for their respective programs.
- One or more representatives from any MCC Program are welcome to join either or both of the Workshops. All attendees will be treated as a single cohort, so if someone attends only one Workshop or has someone else attend in their place, they’ll still receive information about the entire series. The idea is to create a productive channel for all of our colleagues who do the important work of stewarding our Programs.
- Please email Maria Brandt (mbrandt@monroecc.edu) before the end of the day on Friday, February 13 (i.e. before Winter Break), to reserve spots for your program and/or if you have any questions.
