MCC Proud: Meet Student Jalisia Burno

In honor of National Student Leadership Week, we are profiling Monroe Community College (MCC) Student Government Association (SGA) President Jalisia (Lisa) Burno.

Burno is in her second year at MCC, where she is studying Business Administration.

“During my senior year of high school, I took several business courses and really enjoyed them - especially my marketing classes,” said Burno. “They were engaging and informative, and they helped me realize that I wanted to pursue a career where I could combine creativity with strategy and data.”

She initially chose MCC for practical reasons—its affordability and location—but now considers it “one of the best decisions she ever made.”

“MCC has provided me with not only a strong academic foundation but also incredible opportunities for personal growth, leadership, and connection,” said Burno. “When I first came here, I wasn’t as confident in my academic abilities, but since then, I’ve made the Dean’s List, stepped into leadership roles, and learned to believe in myself.”

Quite simply - MCC has given her the confidence to face challenges and the tools to succeed!

“I’ve met people from all walks of life and deeply value the diversity and community here,” she added.

In fact, that joy is clearly reflected in her role as SGA President. “It’s been so much more than just business or leadership - it’s been about building relationships, supporting one another, and creating positive change on campus,” she said.

Some of her most meaningful experiences in the SGA involved planning the 9/11 Memorial Ceremony and participating in the 5K Run for Scholarships. “We spent months planning every detail together, and seeing it all come to life was a special moment that reminded me of what collaboration can achieve,” she said.

Many faculty and staff members have played a role in Burno’s MCC journey, with Jodi Orel, Director of Student Life & Leadership Development, having a powerful impact.

“Jodi never fails to speak life into students and lift them up; her positivity is contagious,” said Burno. “It’s not every day that you meet someone who genuinely loves what they do, but from the first moment I met her, I could tell she’s passionate about her work.”

In fact, Jodi’s ability to remain calm under pressure, embrace change, and find the good in difficult situations is something that Burno deeply admires and aspires to emulate. “I credit a big part of my MCC experience and personal growth to her,” said Burno. “Every day, I’m grateful that I’ve had the opportunity to work side-by-side with her.”

Burno is preparing to graduate next month, after which she plans to pursue a bachelor’s degree and later an MBA.

“I’m currently exploring several schools but am especially interested in the University of Rochester, which has an excellent business program for both undergraduate and graduate studies,” she said.

While she’s still figuring out the exact details, Burno hopes to go into marketing analytics, where she can analyze data, understand trends, and help businesses make informed, impactful decisions.

When asked what advice she would give current MCC students, or those considering enrolling at MCC, Burno said, “Use the resources that MCC offers, advocate for yourself, and don’t be afraid to take chances. Step outside your comfort zone, because sometimes the best opportunities come from moments of uncertainty. You might just surprise yourself with how much you’re capable of achieving.”
