Summer Hours 2026

Consistent with previous summers, the College wishes to provide an option for MCC employees to rest and recharge by shifting the College's operating hours on Fridays to 8:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., beginning the Friday after commencement (May 29th) and ending Thursday, July 23, 2026. On Friday, July 24, 2026, employees are expected to return to working their pre-summer hour schedule, as this is the start of a new pay week. These dates align with the payroll workweek, which runs from Friday through Thursday, not Monday through Friday.

As in past years, participation in summer hours is voluntary, not mandatory.

  1. Supervisor Approval - Employees who wish to shift their regular schedule to the summer hours schedule must work out an approved schedule with their department head to work additional hours during the week, enabling them to leave at 1:00 p.m. on Fridays.
  2. Employees Not Participating in Summer Hours - Employees who do not wish to participate in the summer hours schedule, or whose specific job duties or departmental responsibilities prevent them from doing so, will continue to work their regular schedule.
  3. College Holidays - Two (2) College holidays fall during the summer hours period. Specifically:
    • On Friday, June 19, 2026, the College is closed in observance of Juneteenth. As a result, employees should work their regular hours the week following, beginning June 22, 2026, through June 25, 2026. Employees may return to summer hours beginning Friday, June 26, 2026, and must work the additional hours on Monday, June 29, 2026, through Thursday, July 2, 2026, to leave at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, June 26, 2026.
    • Important: On Friday, July 3, 2026, the College is closed in observance of Independence Day. This year, the July 4th holiday falls on a Saturday. As a result, employees should work their regular hours the week following, beginning July 6, 2026, through July 9, 2026. Employees may return to summer hours beginning Friday, July 10, 2026, and must work the additional hours on Monday, July 13, 2026, through Thursday, July 16, 2026, to leave at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, July 10, 2026.
  4. Flexible Work Policy - The summer hours schedule does not prevent supervisors and employees from discussing schedule adjustments in alignment with existing contractual language and consultation with the respective Vice President who oversees the department, so long as any proposed adjustments do not disrupt departmental operations or negatively impact student access to information and resources necessary for their success.
    It is important that all requests be evaluated through the lens of whether approval will disrupt departmental operations or negatively affect student access to information and resources necessary for their success. In addition, one's individual job duties and specific departmental functions must be considered. Supervisors will consider employee requests in the following order to ensure appropriate staffing levels during the summer months:
    • contractual time off requests (e.g., vacation, personal, or sick time);
    • requests to participate in the summer hours
  5. Communication to Vice President - Department heads are asked to communicate with their respective VP about which employees in their area are participating in summer hours, no later than Friday, May 22, 2026.

FAQs and Responses:

  1. If everyone in my department wants to participate in summer hours, do we have to identify one person to stay until 4:45 p.m. every Friday? No. All department employees may adjust their schedules to leave at 1:00 p.m. on Fridays, since the College's public-facing operating hours end at 1:00 p.m.
  2. What if I'm the only one in my department who wants to participate in summer hours? Work out an approved schedule with your department head that allows you to work additional hours during the week so that you can leave at 1:00 p.m. on Fridays. Your colleagues who are not participating in summer hours will continue to work their regular schedules; i.e., they will not work additional hours during the week and will leave at their regular time on Fridays.
  3. I'd like to opt in to summer hours. What if I use accrued time (Sick, Personal, or Vacation) on a Friday during Summer Hours? Do I still have to use 7 hours if I work a 35-hour week? 8 hours if I work a 40-hour week? No. You only need to use the number of hours you are scheduled to work on Fridays under your summer hours schedule.
  4. I'm one of only a couple of people in my department who are working our normal schedule and not opting into the summer hours’ schedule. What are we supposed to do on Friday afternoons?  Work with your supervisor to identify potential projects or assignments within your department and job title that you may complete on Friday afternoons after 1:00 p.m., when public-facing operations and services cease.
