Statement from Chancellor King and SUNY Board of Trustees on Women's History Month

“Women's History Month offers us the opportunity to remember the trailblazers who overcame injustice and inequality to help create a more just society. We recognize and celebrate the achievements of these women whose vision, resilience, and impact continue to shape our communities and institutions.

“SUNY alumnae help move New York State forward as elected officials, judges, and public servants at all levels of government. SUNY graduates have also helped shatter glass ceilings, including Eileen Collins (SUNY Corning Community College 1976), the first woman to command a NASA mission and pilot a space shuttle; Catherine Bertini (State University of New York at Albany 1971), the first woman and first American to lead the United Nations World Food Program; Crystal Peoples-Stokes (SUNY Buffalo State University 1974 and M.S. in 2002), the first woman to serve as Majority Leader of the New York State Assembly; Alejandra Castillo (State University of New York at Stony Brook 1992), the first woman of color appointed as U.S. Assistant Secretary of Commerce for Economic Development; Mitsuki Laycock (SUNY Purchase 2013), known professionally as Mitski, acclaimed singer-songwriter; and Erin Hamlin (SUNY Empire State College 2011), the first American Olympian to medal in luges singles competition with her 2014 bronze medal achievement. These historic firsts paved the way for new opportunities for future generations to follow in their footsteps.

“As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we reflect on the inspiring women leaders who ensured that while they were the first to reach such heights, they wouldn’t be the last. At SUNY, we are proud of our academic offerings and initiatives that help educate, inform, and inspire students and faculty to ensure that women’s history is not only remembered, but celebrated every day.

“During Women’s History Month, we honor the extraordinary contributions of all women leaders across SUNY and recognize the ongoing work needed to create equity and opportunity for all.”
