Reminder to Faculty: Accurate Attendance Matters More Than Ever
Dear Colleagues,
As higher education institutions across the country continue to see an increase in fraudulent student activity, we want to take a moment to highlight the important role consistent attendance tracking plays here at the College.
Taking and reporting attendance regularly isn’t just a federal and institutional requirement, it’s also one of the most effective ways we have to protect the integrity of our courses. Accurate attendance records help ensure that students who are enrolled are genuinely participating in their classes and can assist in identifying behaviors that may signal fraudulent activity. At the same time, these records allow us to spot students who may be disengaging and could benefit from academic or personal support.
Attendance data is critical for many college processes, including census reporting, financial aid eligibility, automated withdrawals, and determining a student’s last date of academically related activity. Clear documentation of academic engagement, whether through in‑person attendance, labs or clinicals, assignment submissions, or other academically related work helps confirm that students are actively progressing in their coursework.
Regular attendance also supports student success. When engagement is clearly documented, it helps both faculty and the college better support students while maintaining compliance and upholding academic standards.
Thank you for your continued diligence in taking attendance and reporting required information in a timely manner, especially during the early weeks of the semester and when recording last dates of attendance. Your efforts play an important role in supporting our students, safeguarding our programs, and helping curb potentially fraudulent activity.
For more detailed information, please refer to 3.3. Student Attendance Procedure, which outlines reporting expectations and applicable federal requirements.
We appreciate all that you do to support our students and uphold MCC’s academic standards.
