MCC GIST Student Wins First Place in Map Competition
Geospatial Information Science & Technology major, Erin Riedel, won first place in the student map competition at the annual Geographic Information Sharing/Special Interest Group (GIS/SIG) Conference in Rochester on April 14th. The conference brings together geospatial professionals, educators, and college students from the greater Genesee and Finger Lakes region for the purpose of GIS education, data sharing, communication and networking with other local, state, and national users, dissemination of information about trends and policies related to GIS, and technology advancement.
Erin’s winning map, highlighting Important Bird Areas in New York State, was created as part of her final project for Cartography (GEG 131) last fall. The map was inspired by an early love of watching birds, something that was passed down through the women in Erin’s family. It also reflects her lifelong appreciation for natural spaces and the naturalist prints of John James Audubon.
If you would like to see this award-winning map in person, please stop by the Geosciences hallway display case on the third floor of Building 11, outside of room 303.
