Tips, Tricks & "Must-Dos" for New Tribunes

Welcome to MCC! The Schools at MCC are ready to help you connect with professors and fellow students who share your interests, to find and join a club or organization, and to make your goals a reality.

You’ve done a lot of work, and now you’re ready to tackle your first semester of College. You’ll find so many opportunities at MCC to learn, grow, make new friends and explore new interests. So let us offer a few suggestions on managing your new College life.

MAP YOUR WAY

You can download maps of our campuses and locations, or pick up a map at an Info Desk (at Brighton Campus outside Admissions in the Peter A. Spina Administration Building, Bldg. 1, and at Damon City Campus at the Public Safety Desk). You’ll also find Welcome Stations set up to help you find your way. If you do get lost, don’t hesitate to ask someone — we promise, the MCC community is here to help!

KNOW YOUR DIGITS

Your M number and your username & password are how you're identified in MCC's various systems. Everyone at MCC receives an M number, and you’d be smart to memorize it or keep it — as well as your username and password — handy. Your M number opens up a lot of doors at MCC: it’s used when you are applying for services, filling out forms, registering for classes, and much more. Where can you find this magic number? Just log in to myMCC, our student portal, and it will be there waiting for you.

GET SCHOOL SPIRIT

Photo of student with books at common study areaDid you know that MCC is made up of six Schools? Each School is focused on one area of learning, bringing together a community of students who share majors and academic interests with special advisors and other staff ensuring student success. Which School are you and your program in? Take a look.

GET MOVING

It’s SO easy to press the snooze button and give a miss to that 8:30 a.m. class. You may regret it come exam time, though. So we’ll just tell you what English Professor Julie Damerall says to her students: “Arrive early and stay late.” You want a bright and happy future — the kind that comes with dedication and hard work — so make that commitment to dive in with enthusiasm and attend your classes each week.

MEET YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD PROFS

So you’re going to classes. What next? According to Physics Professor Emeritus Mike Goho, there’s more: “Make sure you introduce yourself to your professors so that they know who you are and that you are a serious student. And make sure you do your best on your first graded assignment!” Want some help with that? Both campuses have excellent learning centers and libraries staffed with information specialists who can point you in the right direction for your research. You’ll also find laptops you can sign out for up to two hours, comfy chairs to curl up in, and quiet zones.

DIVE IN

Life is more than just work, right? One way to relax, make friends, and enhance your studies is by joining a club or organization. From Africa United to WMCC “The Fuse” radio, you’ll find more than 60 options to suit your interests and abilities. Learn about Deaf culture in the American Sign Language Club, or figure out that funny noise in your Honda Civic at an Auto Club meeting. There are groups for different cultures and ethnic backgrounds — like the Chinese Culture Club — and for a wide variety of interests, from Outdoor Activities Unlimited to the Sci-Fi Fantasy Club. If you don’t see a club you like, gather a few friends and start something new!

FILL 'ER UP

You won’t go hungry at MCC. You’ll find everything from well-stocked vending machines to brick-oven pizzas, Dunkin’ Donuts to Subway. You can even lunch at Food for Thought, a full-service sit-down restaurant on the Brighton Campus run by MCC hospitality students. Find out about these and other options at both campuses, along with info on the Sodexo Flex Dollars Meal Plan, at the Dining Services web page.

EMBRACE IT ALL

In the words of Christopher Kumar, MCC faculty member, engineering science/physics, “This is your time. Learn what you love and enjoy the process.” We hope that you’ll use your time at MCC to follow your passions, expand your horizons, and build relationships that will last long after you’ve got that diploma in hand.

Because isn’t that what college should be all about?
