Presenting Dr. Avriel Epps, a well-known scholar on Artificial Intelligence:

Artificial intelligence (AI) triggers widespread anxiety due to rapid, unpredictable advancements, often mirroring historical fears of technological change. If you listen carefully what concerns are out there about AI in the universe, you’ll hear fears that include massive job displacements, amplified societal bias, loss of human privacy, and existential risks from superintelligence. While immediate concerns focus on (misinformation and bias), deeper fears involve machines outperforming humans, and behaving unpredictably, potentially creating dangerous scenarios. Oh, let’s not forget the misconceptions out there that are amplified by media portrayals rather than immediate technical capabilities.

Please join us for an afternoon of discussion and presentation with Dr. Avriel Epps a dynamic scholar and strategist whose work sits at the crossroads of transformative justice and artificial intelligence.  Dr Epps is a transdisciplinary scholar whose research sits at the intersection of human development.  Her research shows how AI reinforces existing hierarchies based on age, race, gender, health status and other identify markers.  Other areas she has research and written on are “The Intersection of AI and Social Equity”, “Biases in Recommendation Systems and Generative AI” and “The Technical Dimensions of AI Bias and Fairness.

Avriel Epps is a computational social scientist.  She has a PhD from Harvard University in Education with a concentration in Human Development.  She also holds an S.M in Data Science from Harvard’s Engineering and Applied Sciences and a B.A. in Communication Studies from UCLA and is a former Civic Science Postdoctoral Fellow at Cornell University.
