Learn the Facts About Why Mental Health Matters
We invite you to broaden your idea of what health is as you read this
affirming definition by Donald Barr (2014): "a state of complete physical,
mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or
infirmity...health involves health of the body, health of the mind and the
emotions, and health of the social context in which one lives." We at the
Counseling Center and Disability Services office believe that mental
health matters. Our staff is committed to reducing stigma surrounding
mental health, raising awareness, and helping break down barriers which prevent
individuals from receiving support for what are often invisible conditions.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI):
- 1 in 5 U.S. adults
experience mental illness each year.
- 1 in 25 U.S.
adults experience serious mental illness each year.
- 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17
experience a mental health disorder each year.
- 50% of all
lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24.
- Suicide is the 2nd leading
cause of death among people aged 10-34.
*NAMI information comes from studies conducted by organizations such as
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of
Justice.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), mental health and
substance use disorders are the leading cause of disability worldwide. Please
know that there is help, there is hope, and no one should have to navigate
their challenges alone. Many evidence-based treatments exist for mental health
disorders. We can help you get connected to support services, if need be.
