"Classical Liberal Learning in 2020"
What is a liberal education? Why is a liberal education important in an
age in which colleges prioritize career and technical fields? In what ways is a
liberal education crucial to the maintenance of American political
institutions?
Dr. Thuot will explore the nature and purpose of a liberal arts
education. In particular, he will consider two dimensions of liberal learning.
On the one hand, a key purpose of a liberal arts education is to develop skills
and habits of mind that are appropriate to democratic citizens. At the same
time, a liberal arts education of the noblest sort is not primarily concerned
with skill development; it focuses instead on pursuing wisdom as an end in
itself. Dr. Thuot's discussion is especially relevant given criticisms of
American political discourse leading up to this year's presidential election.
