Chinese Writer and Film Maker Zhong Ermao Joins MCC for a Screening of His Film "Smiling From The Grave"

The Arts and Humanities Division and the World Languages and Cultures Department cordially invite you to attend the screening of the short film "Smiling From The Grave", and to meet Mr. Zhong Ermao, the film director, who will introduce his work and answer questions from the audience.

Synopsis: The film is a Chinese story that is both sad and romantic, absurd and realistic. The main character is a poor rural woman who, as the surviving family of her deceased husband, receives a compensation of 640,000 yuan. She then sets out to fulfill her dead husband's wish: to be a city man. The film is the first work of director Zhong Ermao.

"Smiling From The Grave" is in Chinese with English subtitles, and its duration is approximately 16 minutes.

Zhong Ermao graduated from the Law Department of the China Youth University of Political Studies in July 1999. After graduation, he worked as a policeman for three years and a journalist for fourteen years. In September 2016, Zhong began his studies at the Director Department of the Beijing Film Academy. He has also published several novels and short stories. The short film "Smiling From The Grave" has been adapted from one of his short stories. His novels and films all focus on the lives and the fate of the people at the bottom of society.

"Smiling From The Grave" is also on this year's program of the Rochester International Film Festival (rochesterfilmfest.org), the world's oldest continuously-held short film festival, celebrating its 60th anniversary. The festival will take place April 26 to 28.
