Increased Phishing E-mail activity on MCC Student E-mail accounts
MCC student email accounts have been receiving multiple iterations of
phishing emails recently.
A phishing email is a type of social engineering attack often used to steal
user data including login credentials, personal information, and banking/credit
card info. Attackers will pretend to be a trusted entity, most often requesting
urgent action be done by clicking on a link to download an attachment or enter
your login or personal information on a fraudulent website.
Things to check on a suspicious email:
- The sending address - You can check the email address of the sending email
account by hovering your mouse over the display name or by tapping it on your
smart device. Make sure the sending address matches the display name.
- Vague References - Communications from Monroe Community College will be
branded with "MCC". If an email references to MCC as "The University", or does
not have a closing with a specific college department or staff member as the
sender, the email is most likely a scam.
- Spelling Errors - Check the subject and body of the email for spelling
errors and continuity issues.
What to do if you are not sure if an email is legitimate?
You can forward the message to the MCC Student Technology HelpDesk at technologyhelp@student.monroec
c.edu. Staff members will verify the legitimacy of the message and advise
you on the proper course of action.
What to do if you think you entered your information into a phishing
email?
You should immediately change your MCC Network Account Password (https://account.monroecc.edu) and
forward the message to the MCC Student Technology HelpDesk. If you entered
personal or banking information into a fraudulent website, notify MCC's Public
Safety office at 292-2911.
