Please join us for this lecture by Cornell visiting fellow,
Fábio Zuker, on Wednesday, April 13 at Noon.
Climate Change and Socioenvironmental Conflicts in the Brazilian
Amazon
This talk will present a broad view of the current reality in the Amazon
forest, focusing on the current threats presented by deforestation, illegal
mining, and other degrading activities in the region. Fábio will bring
examples from his own reporting, especially on the impact and expansion of
soybean production in the tropical rainforest and the way pesticides are being
used to clear the land and make the life of traditional farming communities
nearly impossible.
Fábio Zuker is a writer and journalist who on
three occasions has been a Pulitzer Center grantee. He holds a master’s
degree from the School for Advanced Studies in Social Sciences in Paris and is
a PhD candidate in Social Anthropology at the University of São Paulo.
He is currently a visiting scholar with Cornell University’s Latin
American & Caribbean Studies Program. His book, The Life and Death of a Minke Whale in the Amazon - and
other stories of the Brazilian Rainforest (Milkweed
Editions), will be published in May 2022.
