Areas of Rescue Assistance During Emergency Evacuations
Areas of Rescue Assistance for Individuals with Mobility
Impairment
During an emergency evacuation, such as when the fire alarm rings,
individuals with mobility impairment may not be able to safely exit the
building without assistance. This includes people using wheelchairs, crutches
or with other obvious mobility impairments as well as those who may not appear
to have an impairment, but may require assistance due to a permanent health
condition such as arthritis.
It is of crucial importance that these individuals know where to wait for
assistance. Designated areas of rescue assistance are generally located near or
at a stair tower and are identified with a wall sign stating "AREA OF REFUGE",
"EMERGENCY ASSEMBLY AREA" or "AREA OF RESCUE ASSISTANCE" (see attachment).
During emergency evacuations, first responders always check these areas
first.
When the fire alarm rings or any other emergency evacuation occurs,
individuals that are unable to safely self-evacuate via the stairs should:
- Proceed to the closest area of assistance, or if not possible, proceed to
the closest stairwell.
- Call Public Safety (292-2911) to report their location or tell another
person to alert emergency personnel of their location once they get
outside.
- If life threatening smoke or flames encroach this area while waiting for
assistance, seek refuge inside an enclosed stairwell. Enclosed stairwells are
constructed of fire resistant materials. providing fire protection for at least
2 hours.
