Green Tip: Plastic Bag Ban Starts March 1
On April 22, 2019 Governor Cuomo signed the New York State Bag Waste
Reduction Act. The sale of single-use plastic bags in New York will be banned
as of March 1, 2020. Plastic bags will still be allowed for uncooked
meat/fish/poultry, bulk items (produce, candy), sliced or prepared foods,
newspapers (delivered), prescription drugs, carryout orders at
restaurants/taverns, garment bags, and bags prepackaged for sale to a customer
(trash bags, food storage bags).
Remember to take a reusable bag with you when you are shopping. It might be
easiest to just leave one or two in your car so you always have a bag available
whether you are going to the grocery store, shopping for clothes, or picking up
something to complete your to do list at the local hardware store
Retail stores will still collect the produce, bulk, and other plastic bags
as well as film plastics (wraps that come over cases of water and toilet paper
for example. Don't put them in your blue bin!
