Introducing Seyvion Scott, First-Year Experience Librarian
With the fall semester well underway, we here in the MCC Libraries
would like to introduce you to our new librarian, Seyvion Scott, who joined us
on September 6. As the First Year Experience Librarian, Seyvion is here to
help advance the library's role in student learning, partner with others
in the MCC community in improving students' first year experience,
and facilitate undergraduate research via a variety of instructional
strategies.
Seyvion graduated from the University of Rochester with a B.A. in
African & African-American Studies, and received her M.S. in Information
Science from the University at Albany. Prior to coming to MCC, she
was the First Year Experience and Instruction Librarian at Medaille
College in Buffalo.
We asked Seyvion a few questions about herself and her aspirations for this
position:
What goals/hopes do you have for getting started as our new
First-Year Experience Librarian?
As the new First-Year Experience Librarian, my goals are to support the
academic and career success of our students by meeting with them one on one for
research help appointments and being inside the classroom to teach information
literacy and how to do research using the library's databases and
collections.
How has your prior experience prepared you for this role at
MCC?
My prior experience in a similar position at another college has
prepared me for this role because I created and taught my very own First-Year
Experience Library seminar this past summer for summer bridge students. My
four-week seminar taught students how to navigate the library's website to find
scholarly resources and also showed them how to conduct effective searches
using filters, boolean operators, and the advanced search feature.
We're thrilled Seyvion joined us in our mission to support out students, so
please join us in welcoming her to MCC, or even better say hello when you see
her around campus.
