Chemistry Faculty and Students Participate in Brighton Festival of Ideas

MCC chemistry faculty and students volunteered at the Brighton Festival of Ideas this past Saturday at Brighton High School. The group presented three workshops titled "The Chemistry of Candy" to middle school students. Volunteers guided students through a series of candy experiments, such as exploring the acidity of sour candies, floating m's of M&M's, what makes pop rocks pop, and preparing gummy worms with sodium alginate.

Our participation in this yearly event would not be possible without the help of our volunteers. In attendance were faculty members Jason Anderson and Ryan Clemens, and MCC students Kaia Gustafson, Taryn Liendecker, Io Reid, Ramiro Melendez Rivera, and Devin Wallace.

If anyone is interested in learning more about the Brighton Festival of Ideas for next year, please feel free to contact Ryan Clemens at rclemens@monroecc.edu.
