Celebrating Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month
Hispanic/Latino Heritage Month: Celebrating traditions/contributions
to our country.
Hispanic Heritage Month is an annual celebration of the history and culture
of the U.S. Latinos and Hispanic communities. The celebration, which spans from
September 15 to October 15, commemorates how those communities have influenced
and contributed to American society at large.
September 15 was chosen as the kickoff because it coincides with the
Independence Day celebration of five Central American countries —Costa
Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua. Those five nations
declared their independence from Spain on September 15, 1821.
One of the traditions that Professor Alas is highlighting this year is the
Day of the Dead. Please stop by the LVG Library to view a typical
altar constructed by Professor Alas, his students and the library
team. The altar will be on display from September 14, 2023 through
October 3, 2023.
Please keep an eye out for future announcements in The Tribune as there will
be other activities taking place throughout this celebration.
