MCC Geospatial Students Present at Local GIS Conference

On April 11, two MCC students presented their projects at the annual Geographic Information Sharing/Special Interest Group (GIS/SIG) Conference in Rochester.  The conference brings together geospatial professionals, educators, and students from the greater Genesee and Finger Lakes region. 

Johnnathan Martinez presented his GEG 130 - Digital Earth project, titled “You’re Right To Vote: Examining the Relationship Between Income and Voter Turnout”.  Johnnathan used Monroe County voting records, census data, and GIS tools to answer the question: How does voter turnout in lower-income neighborhoods compare to voter turnout in higher-income neighborhoods? 

Leah Mathis presented her work as part of an ongoing project, “Holocaust Survivors of Rochester: Their Stories and Legacy”.  Leah created the first in a series of digital StoryMaps as part of her GEG 239 – Capstone in Geospatial Technology class, where she has been working as an intern with MCC’s Holocaust, Genocide, & Human Rights Project.  Leah’s StoryMap focuses on local Holocaust survivor Helen Levinson.
