Build Sustainability into your Life - Reduce Plastics!
Held every October, Campus Sustainability Month is an international
celebration of sustainability in higher education. This month at MCC, the
Sustainability Committee will focus on the harm that plastics can do to our
environment and reducing unnecessary use of plastic products.
Single-use items, designed to be thrown away after use fill our landfills.
Plastic is often the most common material for single-use items. 90% of
plastic single-use items are never recycled. Disposable plastic items do not
biodegrade, they just break into micro-particles that contaminate our
environment.
What can you do?
- Pack lunches using reusable containers rather than plastic
bags.
- Use reusable containers rather than single-use containers for
leftovers.
- Buy a water bottle that you can refill.
- Refuse the straw–just say ‘no straw’ please, or
use paper, reusable silicone, or metal straws.
- Use reusable silicone covers instead of plastic wrap.
- Get a washable/reusable container and fill it with coffee of your
choice rather than purchasing plastic K-cups.
- Ask for no plastic utensils if getting take-out food for eating at
home.
