Celebrating Black History Month with a "Soul Food" luncheon
Global Union International Students Association and the PRISM Multicultural
Center presents a "Soul Food" luncheon
As we observe Black History Month throughout the month of February, it is
interesting to take a look back at where this celebration began. Harvard
scholar Dr. Carter G. Woodson, known as the "Father of Black History," began
promoting what was then called Negro History Week in 1926 during the second
week of February to celebrate the birthdays of Frederick Douglass and Abraham
Lincoln -- two men who had greatly impacted the black population in America.
Over the ensuing decades, it has evolved into a four-week-long celebration of
African American History, which is far too often ignored or under-represented
in the telling of American history.
Please join us as we celebrate an array of different events on both
campuses. Most of you know that we already had a "Soul Food" luncheon at the
Downtown Campus, however the Brighton Campus will be honoring the month with a
"Soul Food" luncheon on Thursday, February 13, 2020 in the
PRISM Multicultural Center (Building 1 Room 108) from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m.
(or until the food runs out). There is a price of $2.00 per person.
In case you are wondering what the menu for the luncheon is:
- Southern Fried Chicken
- Mac & Cheese
- Greens
- Corn Bread
- Sweet Tea & Unsweet Tea
Also join the Campus Activities Board and the PRISM Multicultural Center as
we present the movie "Harriett". American
biographical film about slave-turned-abolitionist Harriet Tubman. This Epic
production was directed by Kasi Lemmons, who wrote the screenplay with Gregory
Allen Howard and it stars Cynthia Erivo as Tubman, with Leslie Odom Jr., Joe
Alwyn and Janelle Monae in supporting roles.
