Reminder: Call for Submissions! English/Philosophy Department's 48th
Annual Writing Contest!
Students are encouraged to enter the 48th Annual English/Philosophy
Department Writing Contest. Student winners will be named in May 2019 and
invited to the department's awards reception that includes recognition, a
monetary award and a chance to qualify for a national competition with the
League for Innovation in the Community College. Winners will also have their
submissions published in Cabbages&Kings, MCC's annual,
award-winning literary and visual arts magazine.

below for categories and specific details.
Entries may be submitted in the following categories:
Callan Award for best research essay: A
thesis-driven research essay (not to exceed 4,000 words).
Rice Award for best creative nonfiction
essay: A creative nonfiction essay (not to exceed 2,000 words).
Cooney Award for best literary essay: An
essay that analyzes/explicates one or more works of literature (not to exceed
2,000 words).
Cloos-Susskind Award for best poem: A
single poem (not to exceed 60 lines).
Langlois Award for best short fiction: A
piece of short fiction (not to exceed 3,000 words).
McMurry Award for best philosophical
essay: A thesis-driven essay in philosophy (not to exceed 2,000
words).
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
The department is currently accepting submissions with a submission deadline
of: 12:00 p.m., Friday, March 29, 2019.
Only students registered for fall 2018 or spring 2019 may enter.
All submissions must be submitted by both hard copy and electronic copy and
must be accompanied by the English/Philosophy Department Writing Contest Entry
Form, found in the English/Philosophy Department Offices (Brighton 5-532 or
Downtown Campus contact: Patti Montrois).
Each submission and accompanying completed entry form must be submitted to
Tina Woodruff in 5-532 on the MCC Brighton Campus or to Patti Montrois on the
Downtown Campus AND by email to twoodruff4@monroecc.edu.
Winners only will be asked for a digital version and an additional League
entry form to be entered into the national contest.
All submissions must be typed, double spaced. Work must be submitted free of
the writer's name, free of markings, and free of grammatical and mechanical
errors.
Winners will be announced in early May 2019.
Materials submitted must be original and previously unpublished in any
college publications.
