Mahon Named to National Student-Athlete Council
Women's soccer player Mya Mahon (Health Sci & Physical Wellness/Comm.
Sci & Disorders) has been appointed to the National Junior College Athletic
Association (NJCAA) National Student-Athlete Council as one of two
representatives from Region III, which represents 21 community colleges from
across NY state. The council, chaired by Heather Conger, NJCAA Region 19
Women's Assistant Director and Aaron Bouyea, NJCAA Region 3 Men's Assistant
Director and current MCC Director of Athletics, aims to provide
student-athletes from all 24 NJCAA regions the opportunity to engage and grow
while attending their two-year institution, at a national level.
"Student-athletes and their experiences are at the heart of everything we do
and our number one priority," stated Bouyea. "The development of the
student-athlete council provides a forum for our student-athletes to have a
voice at the national level on major issues facing college athletics and the
NJCAA. Mya is a true leader and will represent MCC and Region III well at the
national level."
The council will meet via Zoom throughout the year to discuss relevant
dynamics surrounding student-athletes at the two-year college level today.
Council members will also attend the annual NJCAA Convention, serve a variety
of roles on the council, assist with decision making, as well as propose new
ideas in meetings with NJCAA leadership and national office leadership.
"I am grateful for this amazing opportunity to be apart of the NJCAA
National Student-Athlete Council," said Mahon. "I am eager to represent NJCAA
student athletes from all over New York State and to be the voice to include
them in national dialogue. I can't wait to work side by side with council
administrators and fellow student-athletes to advance council goals of creating
new opportunities for the student-athlete experience."
Goals for the committee include but are not limited to: Advance NJCAA
student-athlete voices to include them in national dialogue, create new
opportunities for the student-athletes experience, encourage student-athlete
opinions on current or proposed legislation, provide recommendations based on
student-athlete involvement, and increase engagement and participation by NJCAA
Student-Athletes at a regional and national scope.
"This is a great honor for Mya, the women's soccer program and the full
athletic department," said head coach Sal Galvano. "She represents both
character and excellence on the field and in the classroom. She has a great
personality, along with her leadership ability she displays, makes her a
perfect choice for the NJCAA National Student-Athlete Council. She is a great
choice to represent MCC on this Council."
