Fall Learning Communities
MCC is offering a variety of learning communities this fall semester, so
please consider enrolling in one or recommending them to your students. Some of
these learning communities offer reading support with REA 100, Reading and
Thinking in the Disciplines, some are for first semester students taking TRS
courses, and some target specific programs and populations, such as Criminal
Justice and Education majors and ESOL students. These learning communities are
being offered on both campuses during both the day and evening, and one
includes an online COS 101. A flyer describing each of these learning
communities, along with directions on how to enroll, is attached.
Below are a few reasons why one might want to consider enrolling in a
learning community:
- Although the LC consists of two or more classes, it will feel like one
course, because the classes are so carefully integrated.
- In many cases, one class will be designed to support the other. For
example, REA 100 Reading and Thinking in Psychology will focus on the
reading required in PSY 101, and on the study skills and habits of mind that
students need to succeed in PSY 101.
- Students will often be using the same textbook in both classes.
- Students will be with some of the same people in two different classes, so
they can more easily work together, become study partners, friends, etc.
- Lots of studies have shown that students who enroll in learning communities
stick with college longer and are more successful.
